When was the last time you followed this?

ImageWell for me it was this morning at 8am. Bikram Yoga. I had bought a Groupon for 20 classes, thinking I was going to be head over heels for it and be this rock star yogi person. Well I went to my first class back in August and never returned. Truthfully I just think I was not mentally ready for it.

For all of you not familiar to Bikram, its quite different from regular yoga. For one you are performing a sequence of 26 postures in a 105°F room for 90 minutes. Did I forget to mention there is also 40% humidity? So needless to say after my first class I was not hit with the urge to go back instantly the next day. Then as it usually happens life got in the way, and before I knew it, it was now 2014 and my classes were about to expire. I have gone from doing Bikram once every 6 months to now everyday for the next two weeks. I do have to admit something though… I love it! Months ago when I went, I thought I needed a friend to go with me. (So at least I knew there was another crazy person out there willing to go into the heat!) However, now that I was faced with the challenge to use up all my classes in time, I had to go alone. Now I am not one that needs a friend to go to the grocery store or leave my house in general, but for Bikram I definitely felt I needed that extra Imagesupport.

With that in mind I would like to ask you a question. Where are you feeling supported in your life and where are you not? If you are not feeling supported in an area that you would like, how can you change this?

For me Bikram was one of those things. While I would have loved support on it, it was really something I needed to do on my own. I now look forward to the heat. It is my hour and a half to let my mind go and simply just be in the present. It is an amazing mental and physical exercise that leaves my mind at ease and my muscles and joints feeling great! I tend to have really inflamed joints from old sports injuries (although I am rethinking that these days and attribute 90% to my diet over the years. Specifically gluten.) and the heat and deep stretching has really helped them so far! I leave there drenched in sweat, feelings of accomplishment and most importantly revived and able to tackle whatever the day throws at me.

Run, Yoga, Sun

ImageWinter quarter.

11 weeks. 22 credits. (1) 5 week accelerated class. A part time job. 4.0 GPA.

Like every quarter it starts off slow and easy. It begins to build speed around week 6 and before you know it there are too many things to count. 

Oh I forgot to add moving in week 10 to the mix, while trying to prepare everything to leave for vacation.

At times it was overwhelming, but I wouldn’t trade it for a second. I was able to learn a lot about myself this quarter. 

I learned:

*to let go of the things I can’t control

*I really like to be spontaneous as much as I like to plan things

*I love making vegan, paleo cookies

*Communication really is key

*Having a few good friends are essential

*Whatever you can dream you can make happen

**Oh and I am remarkably good at procrastinating on writing papers

Those are just a few of the things that this quarter taught me. It is weird to think that in a couple of years I will no longer be living my life 11 weeks at a time. However, for now I like it that way. It can be stressful at times, but it can be extremely exhilarating as well.

There is always the light at the end of the tunnel when the quarter starts and that is break at the end! I decided it was time to get away and catch up with my sister for the week. Just because it is vacation doesn’t mean its time to give workouts a break too. I think it is actually the perfect time to get back into it. Towards the end of the quarter I can let workouts slip with the amount of stuff that needs to get done.

Thankfully I have a great friend that is willing to run with me late at night when I find time to finally fit it in for the day!  

Today I found a great fresh produce place where I picked up some oranges, apples, grapes, cantaloupe, and some greens for good measure.

To add to the deliciously sweet fruit, there is a yoga place right across the street that I will take advantage of this week along with some great running trails. 

Break is a time for rest and rejuvenation so you can hit the ground running once week 1 rolls around once again. 

I look forward to using this week to my advantage and really taking everything it has to offer.

The Tuesday Tidbit

5:30am… The last thing I want right now is to be awake let alone go to a yoga class. 

 

But I know how thankful I am once I get there.

 

The drive is usually a blur, the first downward dog foreign to my body, but my breath is always recognizable. 

 

I begin to get lost in my breath as we approach our first of many chaturangas for the hour. “Goodnight moon, good morning core,” the teacher says with a smile in her voice. 

 

My core was definitely awake as we did several pushups… talk about a wakeup call!

 

Needless to say the combination of the teacher, time of day, and sharing it with a good friend makes it all the better. 

 

Lately between work and midterms it has been super overwhelming. I usually exercise, but even that doesn’t seem to cut it right now. I found this article and know I have been in need of doing this. 

 

Declutter. 

 

And when I say declutter I don’t just mean cleaning out my closets and donating to good will. I mean intense borderline extreme declutter, but I need it. If you need some ideas of what you might want to cut back in your life try this blog where I got my inspiration. Hopefully it helps some of you!

 

What are some of the things you do to reduce stress in your life?

 

I also made this fantastic juice today! It was all citrus which I usually don’t do, but I had a mad craving for it.

 

It constituted of:

 

7-8 oranges

2 grapefruit

1/2 lemon

hunk of ginger

I used a recycled Kombucha bottle of mine to store the juice and it had this awesome quote on it…

Monday night savasana to Tuesday morning flow

No body in their right mind likes Monday, which is probably why I do. It is a chance for me to take everything that I prepared over the weekend and hit the ground running once the alarm clock goes off. 

In a perfect world it would be without an alarm clock, but for now it will have to do. 

My favorite part of Monday… hot yoga with Loren. 

It feels amazing to open up your muscles, mind, and heart and surrender them to a very very hot room… 106 degrees to be precise. 

The first time I walked into a hot yoga class I wanted to run out gasping for cold air. I thought the idea of “breathing your way through it” sounded impossible. Now it is one of my favorite yoga classes! 

The other part I love is the ten minutes or so afterward that I get to catch up with Loren. Usually the weekend takes us apart between work and studies, so this is our time to recap. 

If one were to eavesdrop on our conversation they would probably think someone had just shown us the world for the first time. Our inner child releases and our dreams and aspirations come pouring out. The creativity in our minds is endless and it is magnificent. 

While many hate Monday this is why I love it. I get recharged and ready to go for the week and look forward to all the triumphs and victories it has to offer.
